You should be concerned that 9% of your tax base just up and left the town. I gotta imagine a big tax spike coming in the near future.

You should also be concerned that 72 homeowners in your town just lost good jobs and are going to have to compete with a ton of other people for jobs in an industry that is dying.

Hopefully something new will come in ASAP and pay people good salaries.

Roche has been slowly closing down for the past twenty years. They once has 10,000 at that site. The state knew it was a matter of time. It has nothing to do with the tax rate. It's the nature of the industry.

You want to find a reason, go talk to the lawyers who file a class action suit every time one out of a million breaks out in a rash from a new drug. Roche hasn't had a big seller in years. Research has been held back by these suits so why do they need these facilities. Plus the mergers make all the facilities redundant.

Nutley isn't the only one taking a hit. A big part of that facility is in Clifton. If they didn't know about it, they would have to be idiots. It's been a long time coming.

Guess he's too busy campaigning and appearing at his numerous town meetings calling everyone crude names to worry about it.

Right, it is the company downsizing and has nothing to do with corporate tax rates. Indiana lost many more Roche jobs than NJ is losing, and they probably have a lower tax rate than NJ.

Pathmark has been a disaster for years - the end result of taking on too much debt with junk bonds, making margins of less than 1% while paying 8% is a receipe for disaster. KFC? - so what, maybe folks are eating healthier, watching their cholesterol and blood pressure - you want KFC? there are many other towns around that have stores. Bensi's is an Italian chain, in a heavily populated Italian demographic that does most of their cooking and eating at home, when one cooks better than a chain, why would you bother going to eat substandard overpriced food?

It's not that much cheaper in Indiana, those Roche jobs are good-paying high 5 figure and 6 figure jobs - a retail employer will not offer pay and benefits that even come close to it. This is a HUGE loss for the surrounding areas - the towns, county and state governments don't have a clue. Keep voting them in though, because cousin Tony works for the commissioner, so he must be good. Or, he's a 3 term former state assemblyman or 2 time town mayor - so they know how "to work the system". The only thing they know to work is how to get the most benefit for themselves. They view your pocket as their personal piggybank to pillage.

How do you think Roche's closing will impact property taxes for single family homeowners?

Taxes will still be paid on the property. the impact will be 1000 less people using the surrounding businesses. But the days of Roche having the major impact is long gone. The peck of their operation was many years ago along with AT&T.

This isn't the first large company in the state to move.

So you don't necessarily think Roche's closing will indirectly increase property taxes for Nutley residents? I'm asking because I'm thinking about purchasing a home there.
