Honestly - depending on time of day 4 hours will not be enough because its not 4 hours its really 3 hours because you need to be at the gate in time - now if your inbound flight to EWR is 30-60 min late - which is pretty common - you get get screwed pretty quickly.

But - here goes - this is most reliable [meaning it takes the same amount of time regardless of time of day]

Amtrak or NJ TRansit from the EWR Airport Rail Station to Penn Station.

Subway to Grand Central - you also walk it underground - takes 10-15 min if you walk fast.

LIRR to Jamaica Station [almost every single LIRR train goes through Jamaica - its like the Atlanta of NY mass transit]

Take the Air Train from Jamaica station to JFK [$5]

This almost as bad as trying to get from Midway to OHare before they built the Orange line -

PACK LIGHT.

You can try a taxi - that can take 90 min and cost over $100 -

Airport Connections - Ground Transportation - Newark Liberty International Airport - Port Authority of New York & New Jersey

Four hours can be a tight connection but doable....

You want speed right here is the correct way use airtrain newark to NJTransit take NJT to NYC penn station then walk over to the LIRR parts of Penn station get your ticket use LIRR to jamacia for airtrain YOU DO NOT NEED THE SUBWAY at any point during this trip.

Please do not mislead the OP with inaccurate directions. Amtrak is cost prohibitive. And LIRR trains do not leave from grand central they leave from penn so no need for the subway at all for this trip. Just transfer from NJT to LIRR from penn.

Don't know how you managed to make such an arrangement, but it's too difficult to get to JFK from Newark by public transportation as too many things can go wrong for someone who is unfamiliar and especially if you only have 4hrs inbetween flights. My recommendation is to cab it or rent a car.

How is renting a car going to help? By the time he picks it up and drops it off, not to mention tries to find his way through NYC, he'll miss his flight.

Depending on the time of day, a cab may or may not be faster than public transportation. If you do take public transportation, the best process is: Newark to New York Penn (via NJ Transit), then New York Penn to JFK (via LIRR and Airtrain). There is no need to go from New York Penn to Grand Central.

It Only takes 30 mins from the EWR Terminal to Penn Station NY , then to Jamaica JFK via LIRR it takes 15 mins , then 10 mins to the JFK Terminal via the Airtrain. In total its about an 1hr with the switching , its all easy...and plenty of stations have attendants to help you.

Yea , trying to get from EWR to JFK on a good day takes an hr...these days there seems to be something that always messes it up

If he reserves the rental car, it is not that long of a process. Since the rental company will have his cc on file, drop off is also a pretty speedy process. Nonetheless... my first recommendation is to cab it.

We can argue all day as to what the faster the option is, but cabbing it, although expensive, would be the safest option.
