We are looking to move out of Hudson County into the suburbs (renting). So far we've focused our search along the NJ Transit train lines, as my husband will need to take public transit into Exchange Place in Jersey City. However, someone mentioned that there are also buses that run into Newark Penn, where he could then transfer to the PATH.

I have a feeling this might open up more cities in our hunt. Places we've been considering are: Cranford/Westfield and Rahway/Metuchen. Can you recommend other towns that have good bus service to Newark Penn and are nice, family-friendly, safe areas? We aren't focused on schools, just want a town with some green grass and other young professionals raising kids.

North Arlington and Kearny have short bus rides to Path stations in Harrison and Newark. My guess is you would be better taking train from places such as Metuchen to Newark-Penn Station.
