I'm looking at the Roxbury Township area to be a bit closer to my husband's job and I work in downtown Newark. I have experienced the rush hour nightmare that is I-80 in that area and am wondering what alternatives I would have. I am looking at 46 to 280 and bypassing 80 completely. But is 46 any better? What about 10? Google gives me about an hour taking 10 without traffic, which I could handle IF there wasn't really much traffic.
Anyone do this or a similar commute? What do you suggest?
Theres a ton of traffic on route 10 and also 280 , So I would take the Train either from Mount Arlington or Dover which takes about 65 mins....to Newark Broad Street where he can switch to the Newark Light Rail or walk to his job.
I have reservations about taking the train - and take them for what they're worth, coming from someone who moved here from Michigan and isn't used to public transit. I'm not sure about shelling out the $248 for a monthly pass plus, as a young blonde-hair-blue-eyed girl from the midwest, I'm also not too sure about the walk from the Newark station to my job. It's about 15 minutes and through the college campuses downtown but I'm still wary...
Its safe in Downtown Newark considering 400,000 commute into each day without incident, 248$ vs a ton of traffic along 10 , 80/280 which could amount to 2hrs a day one way on the worst days vs a peaceful commute.
10 and 46 are worse than 80. Which isn't really bad by my standards (set by I-270 in the DC area and US-422 and the Surekill Distressway in Philadelphia). 280 isn't all that bad if you're going to Newark (it tends to back up worst where you split off to Harrison and Jersey City), but then you have to get through Newark.
Downtown Newark, during the day, not a problem. The Morris&Essex line, definitely not a problem. If you're working on the other side of Rutgers you don't have to walk the whole way, you can just take the light rail (no additional fee once you have the monthly pass)
