I will be moving to NJ end of July, and will need to get a US driver license in order to buy a car and get insured. I do own a valid foreign driver license.
After looking at the DMV website and searching on the internet, I am still not fully clear on what will be required for me to get a driver license in NJ.
It SEEMS that coming with the "6 points ID" documents and an official translation of my foreign license should be enough to get the NJ license, after going only through the vision test.
My questions would be:
- Is this a correct understanding?
- If yes, does it mean you can come in with these documents and walk out with the permit?
- If not, will I need to take the knowledge test and road test? what is the usual wait time to get a road test in NJ?
I find this somewhat bizarre in the sense that it gives a list of acceptable temporary visa statuses for non-citizens...but says nothing about people with legal permanent residence (green cards) who are not yet citizens???

DMV/MVC treats GC holders the same way they do the citizens. There's no difference. Mostly because most of the GC holders will become citizens by the next license renewal window.

Ok, but that's still confusing because citizens who are new residents in NJ have to convert their driver's license from another state, but a new GC arrival will have a foreign license. Anyway I presume it's safe to assume the same rules for converting a foreign license will apply?

True, but most new GC already have a license based on their Visa.

For those who have already been living in the US under other visas and adjusted status yes - for the many (and there are many) who obtain their GCs in their home country and then move over, no, they will only have foreign licenses.
