I do not want to take the chance of contaminating the earth or my basement;
so, I guess I will pay for the oil removal by a professional. I was hoping to recoup
some of last years oil cost. Unfortunately, it will be a big monetary loss. My change to
natural gas and an efficient furnace should allow me to realize a sizeable saving over oil fired heat.
Thank you to everyone that provided suggestions.
Bill

While you can, fines to the operator are stiff if caught. Such a small amount probably wouldn't matter but with all the crap at the bottom of those tanks the chance of screwing up the filters outweigh the benefits.

But I have to agree with others. Why would you do this during the heating season? you will be without heat for a while. Just run down the tank until it's low and do it them. But I'd wait for spring. Now they are all going to be busy.

If you need oil to get you through the season, don't get a fill-up. You should have a good idea of your burn rate. Then get a recycling company to drain the tank of what's left.
