I am thinking about replacing the FOMICA laminate counter-top in my kitchen with granite as part of my kitchen remodeling project. The replacement should be relatively straight forward because there are no 90 degree angles, and the linear feet is only ~12ft*2ft.
Home depot seems to carry a wide selection of granite counter tops offered at $50-$90 per sqft (with installation included). But my friends all seem to think that home depot often over charges. What are people's thoughts on this?
My dad in NH, just finished a Kitchen re-mod, He found both HomeDepot & Lowe;s Prices at least much higher, with doing aot of stuff that added to the bill, that was not needed. He wound up contracting the work himself with vendors he knew from around town. For bout 1/3 less maybe more.
The folks I know who contracted with both Home Depot and Lowe's for repairs/improvements to their home were universally disappointed. Whether you consider HD/Lowe's installers' "no-shows" and very long delays before they showed up for appointments, or whether you look at often sub-standard workmanship, I think that you are almost always better-off with an independent company.

thanks for all of your comments. on a related note, where can I find qualified contractors for kitchen remod? Online, newspapers?
ask your neighbors (after you've seen their kitchen), who they used. Realtors can also have a good sense for the best local contractors. Online, "Angie's list" is a rating/reviews service for all sorts of needs. Although there is a fee to use the service. good luck
Agree that it's a good idea to avoid HD and Lowe's for this kind of thing. We had good luck getting granite countertops from All Granite and Marble--the prices were very competitive, much better than the chain stores, the customer service was good, they were super fast and we were able to choose our own slab (they have an enormous warehouse filled with them).

I'll second that - have used them several times. Once you've picked your slab and they've come to measure, you can go and lay out what part of the slab you want to use.
Where in NJ are you? - depending on location, I have a few names of contractors.
Counter tops are one of the easier things to have someone else do..... that price is pretty standard I would say depending all on the origin, color, etc. i would check with an independent fabricator locally before using HD.
I didn't like marble.com because they wanted to put seams in when it could have been done with a single slab.

I am in North Edison, any recommendations? Thanks
