I bet there are websites where you could look up property taxes online.
I think mid range taxes for a typical house used to be around $3K. I turned down buying a fairly big suburban ranch house because the taxes where over $4K, but now most everyone pays more than that even with smaller urban houses.

Also would have to know what typical taxes are like in FL in order to compare.

BTW my knowledge of RE taxes above is in the USED TO BE category. I'd have to look up what we pay now,

Some of the real estate websites should give at least an estimate of the taxes. Check some listings for the towns you are interested in.

Florida has no state income tax. Property taxes are probably not that different, but people claim Florida residency (or just move to Florida) to avoid state income taxes, not for lower property taxes.

Our property taxes in FL are significantly lower than NJ...on similarly sized houses.

Property taxes in NJ are higher than anywhere in Florida. However in Florida they pay hurricane/flood insurance, something that most NJ residents do not pay, which is quit high as well.

Florida has no state income tax, something that NJ residents pay. Sales tax is similar, but NJ has no tax on shoes and clothes.
Food is in general cheaper in NJ than in FL.

I was doing research for the family move earlier this year and was looking at Florida.

From what I've found out: Take the property tax plus hurricane insurance (if you're allowed to purchase it) and in most cases it costs more to have a home in Florida.

Hence why we stayed in NJ but moved to the Southern part from Northern NJ.

Interesting. This was not my experience at all. I found that in FL my property taxes + insurance + HOA fees were still way less than my NJ property taxes + insurance. And that is before I add in no state income tax.
