I know that, as you travel south down 34/35/36, a lot of the neighborhoods are kinda run-down.

How far south do you have to go until the neighborhoods start getting better? Are any of the neighborhoods north of Fair Haven / Red Bank, closer to the shoreline, that aren't run-down?

They say Keyport has made a come back but I haven't been there to verify. Atlantic Highlands is nicer than it was ten years ago that I can confirm.

Also Matawan/Aberdeen is nice too especially the closer you get to Holmdel.

What about Shrewsbury or Little Silver? If they are too pricey, you could also look at West Long Branch. It's nicer overall than Long Branch--take some of the side streets off of 71 and take a look.

None are north of Red Bank, but are close by.

Its the highway itself that is rundown. You cannot judge the character of a town by how it looks along the highway.

Even Sea Girt (one of the wealthiest "nicest" town in Monmouth Co) looks run down along Highway 71.

Unfortunately, Shrewsbury, Little Silver, Long Branch, etc. would be too far south for us.

How are the school systems in Matawan/Aberdeen, Holmdel, and Keyport?

I've heard mixed reviews about Keyport, so I'm hesitant to look there.

Eh, some people have said Keyport is OK, and I love its little waterfront street with the little shops, especially the indie coffee shop, but others have said it has issues.

One night after a meeting at the coffee shop, I left around 9 p.m. I was parked on a side street and turned down another side street to turn around, and there was this group of teenagers hanging out in the middle of the street. They weren't playing a sport or anything, standing around. They stared me down defiantly and wouldn't get out of the road at first/get out of my way. It was a little creepy, but I just kept driving slowly and they moved aside, very slowly. Don't know what that may mean as far as the overall town goes, but it was a little hostile and I wasn't really expecting to come across something like that in this little town.

Living in the area on weekdays, I'd say Matawan, Keyport, Hazlet and Holmdel are nice. Certain parts of the towns, near the water, but away from the constructed "waterfront" seem a bit shady, they're the lower-priced areas, but in general they're nice towns. Shanghai bun is in Matawan! YUM! Keyport has some very pretty old houses, and apartment complexes built colonial style.
