My husband starts a new job soon in Manhattan. We are from the suburbs. We have two young children and two large dogs. My husband wants a commute no more than 30 minutes. I want safety and somewhere my children can get an excellent education (not just average) without a hefty price tag. That being said- where should we be looking and why? Thank you in advance.

^^^ This. Especially without the hefty price tag. May want to focus your search to Central NJ.

Greenmamma, I'll be frank and say that your expectations are completely unrealistic. most people in NJ consider a reasonable door to door commute to the city to be +/- 1 hour, one way. Towns with good school systems within this radius of NYC are expensive.

What everybody else said. Your best bet is to start off with a firm grasp on the reality of commuting times from NJ suburbs to Manhattan.

One idea is to pull out a map and look at it in conjunction with the commuting times on the NJ trains and buses so you can see what areas take what time frames, find something you think might be in your commuting-time range (but don't waste your time with the 30-minute idea) and then look up those towns.

Why don't you use the questions on the sticky at the top of the page so we get a clearer idea of what you are looking for, and then some people can point you to appropriate choices re housing/prices/schools, etc. Also, study the map of the NY/NJ area to get an idea of the layout of the geography, especially that lovely wide river, which is partly what makes commutes longer than they would in a place where you just merrily drive over the city limits from the burbs. Knowledge is power, as they say!

It also helps to know what part of Manhattan hubby is going to be working. There's a huge difference in how to commute depending on the location of work.

I suspect Greenmomma and Greenpapa are never coming back here and have decided to stay where they are, hehehe.
