We've just put an offer on a place in Montclair Heights. Can someone tell me more about the demographics and nearby schools especially elementary.
We are an immigrant couple in our mid thirties with a toddler and are hoping to live in a diverse community that values education. I'm hoping the people around are friendly and welcoming

I lived on the other side of town by Passaic almost a decade ago. The people in Clifton are by & large nice and down-to-earth.
As far as Clifton schools, from what I heard Clifton elementary schools aren't so bad, especially in nice neighborhoods. When it gets worse is the crowded middle school and the HS which is like the 2nd most crowded in the entire state.

For pre-k, I'd highly recommend Ben Samuels center at Montclair State. I have friends that went to school 16 on Grove for elementary and had a good experience, but then went to private school for mid. I also had a friend who left private school to go to Clifton HS. He switched largely to play soccer and it was more than a few years back, so not much help I'm afraid.

I believe the elementary is school 16 on Grove St. It's a nice school, however, I have heard (from Principals and teachers) many negative things about the middle and high school.

Clifton is pretty diverse, large hispanic population in particular. Montclair Heights and Richfield/Allwood sections are the nicest in my opinion, so you put an offer in a nice area. I know the high school doesn't have the best reputation (only 50% of the population goes off to a 4 year college, for example) but I can't speak for the middle schools. Not to say that you couldn't get a decent education still as I know a few people who went through the school system and seem perfectly well educated. I would imagine the Montclair Heights area school would be among the better elementary schools in town.
I'm confused, though, wouldn't you research the diversity and school system before putting in an offer?

Good question! well the diversity is something I wasn't able to research and really get a feel for. I did find out that school 16, 2 ad 5 are the best ones..in that order. We've put an offer on a house in that area because its the best value for money in a nicer part of a town that has a good commute to midtown manhattan.

Would you perhaps be better off a mile down the road in Montclair? I know the taxes are higher but I don't think you'd have to worry as much about the schools overall. Clifton HS is not rated well in most surveys.

Montclair isn't as commuter friendly (to midtown manhattan) as much as we'd like. also the taxes are really quite high!
