I am interested in moving to White Township but a few people have mentioned to me that there is a significant KKK presence in the area. If you have any knowledge or experience with this, please fill me in. Thanks!

Well, Mississippi's KKK made headlines for decades, even though it consisted of one man who'd moved down from New York. He did have a sizable following, though. Both followers would drive in from Alabama for his well-publicized rallies.

The media handled it well: closeups of the Klansmen, to obscure the fact that there were only three of them (one or all of whom could have been government agents trying to get something started), and wide-angle shots of all the people protesting the 'Klan'.

I'm sure New Jersey is similarly overrun with Kluxers. I'd be just petrified with fear. Petrified, I tell you...

When I hear about this sort of stuff I classify it with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, etc.

Not sure how active it is today, but Oxford was pretty much a big KKK town back in NJ around the 1920's.

The KKK was big everywhere back in the 1920s.

Yes, in the '20s NJ had perhaps the largest KKK membership of any northern state.

A piece of history that one of our local church groups would like us to forget is the extremely close connection between the Pillar of Fire Church (located in the Zarephath section of Franklin Twp) and the KKK. The church's bishop, Alma White, used to preach from the pulpit (and via their radio stations) about the need for white folks to support and to join the KKK in order to "preserve the white race". She was also known for active discrimination against Catholics and Jews.

I am not suggesting that this religious group has current ties to The KKK, but they seem to conveniently gloss over this disgraceful part of their history.

Thanks, everyone, I feel better now. Considering the fact that I don't plan to move to Oxford in a time machine set to 1920, looks like I don't have to worry. :-)

I've seen that picture before but hardly doubt as it looks to new to be from the 1920's.
