Folks,

I am looking at places close to 67th street in NYC where I am to work. My rental budget is 1200 dollars and so Edge water, Hoboken, Weehawken are out of my price range. When I look for apartments that fit my criteria on forrent.com I see a place called Mill Run located in Union, NJ.

My questions are: How safe is Union Township NJ for a single, black woman? I have read in some threads that Union township might be racially insensitive and that black folks get looked at badly at local bars is this true? I am black.

Second question. It appears that the drive to my work is approx. 38 mins from Union to 67th street. My plan is to get monthly parking at my workplace in NYC and drive to work. Considering that rent at the place am looking is approx 1000 dollars for a one bedroom parking in NYC will not be too much for me.
Is this feasible? It takes just as much time commuting via public means infact longer.

Any advise is appreciated.

Did you factor that there is a toll to cross over to NY ($12)? Less if you car pool.

I live in Union. It is safe. Demographics have changed drastically over the past 10 years and a lot of poorer uneducated miniorities have moved in. People have a problem with ignoramuses, not educated people of color - big difference. I would never raise a family there though. School system sucks because you have all the trash from Irvington, Newark, Elizabeth not giving a darn about education and thus dragging down test scores.

You may also want to look into Springfield. If you are up for taking the bus, it has several stops in Springfield, easy ride into the city and affordable.

Stay away from Mill Run...it is right on the Irvington border and in a rough neighborhood. Had a friend who lived right across from here in Irvington up until about a year ago. Car burglaries/theft was common, also robberies.

the town has aging senior citizens, working classed whites, a few of whom are even borderline upper middle classed living on the side of the golf course, african-americans, African immigrants, South Americans, and Asians. It's like a suburban version of Queens, New York. it's a cultural mecca.

Excellent advice for the OP--who asked her question approximately 6 1/2 years ago...

Yes, I live in Union too and the same problem in many towns within the region is the invasion of low grade citizens from inner cities.

My kids has already identified what kind of kids are always failing in school and causing problems and he's only 8 yrs old. And these are not illegals, they are American born inner city kids now living outside of cities into suburban NJ towns.
