First of all, thank you to all of the kind people that answer so many questions on here for those of us that are relocating. Its invaluable information and I really appreciate it. We have lived all around the country at this point, but now that we have a child...relocating seems to be an entirely different beast!

My husband is beginning a new job in Sayreville, NJ. We are coming to look at homes next week and have been assigned two real estate agents. One is in the Northern Central area and will be showing us homes in East Brunswick, South Brunswick and Metuchen (although I am wary of the commute from Metuchen as I hear the traffic is terrible).

The other agent is showing us homes southeast of Sayreville in Marlboro, Manalapan, and Freehold.

Any thoughts on the differences between these two areas? Our main goal during this first house hunting trip is to try and find the community that is the best fit for our small family.

About Us:

Two professionals, mid thirties with one 2 year old child. Mom is currently stay-at-home.
Liberal, active in the community, looking for access to the arts, nice restaurants etc.
Single family home between 400-450k
Decent school district
Would be nice to have a neighborhood that is welcoming and that has opportunities for the toddler

Any insight you have about the community vibe in these two areas would be VERY MUCH appreciated. Any towns that we are not being shown but you think would be a good fit are more than welcomed.

Thank You!

the commute would be eaiser from Metuchen to Sayreville than it would from Freehold or Manalapan. Not to mention Metuchen is a nice community with good schools and a vibrant downtown. I would look there.

Traffic is pretty bad in Metuchen, but Metuchen to Sayreville is a relatively easy ride. Most of the traffic in Metuchen is connected to Route 1/Route 27 as well as the train station, and you wouldn't be dealing with any of that. It is definitely the easiest commute of any of the towns you listed. And I can't imagine the traffic situation in the Brunswicks and the Freehold area would be much better than in Metuchen. Central Jersey in general is very traffic-y, just a fact we have to deal with unfortunately.

As someone who is very familiar with Metuchen I can tell you that you fit the bill very well of what a Metuchen resident is like/what they're looking for and you would probably fit in very well there.
