I was just wondering if and when the state of New Jersey changes their license plates. I know some states do it with frequency and some states don't for decades. Can anyone enlighten me? This is very petty of me, but I hate the p*ss-yellow colored plates we've always had. We have the name Garden State printed on it and it's complimented by the color of urine, lol. Thanks guys.

I believe the last change to the current plate was around 1992. I don't think there is any set time period for them. The plate before that was blue, and the plate before that was yellow.

Late 1993, 1994 was when they went from blue AAA-11A format to the yellow format of AAA1111 which police found were very hard to read so then they revised the format to AA-111A until they ran out of alpha combos they switched to the most recent A11-AAA. I suppose you are stuck with the yellow ones for awhile.

Actually I like New Jersey's license plate, they are yellowish color, plain with the map of NJ in middle, and nickname on bottom with state name on top. The old blue one was ugly.

I used to live NY's license plate (blue and white), but since 2-3 years ago they changed it to ugly color and old looking style :/

If I recall correctly, the state went back to yellow after years of complaints from the police that the blue ones were hard to read, not enough contrast.

LOL! Actually it's supposed to be goldfinch yellow. The state bird is the Eastern Goldfinch.

Why don't you get one of the many interesting vanity plates? Shore to Please is nice, and so is the Pinelands plate, and the animal friendly plate.

Anyway, you can read more here:

I like NJ's license plate design. One of my favourite designs that I have seen. At least you are not in NY...they recently got a really ugly design. Though their old one in the 90s was really good.

First it was switched back to AAA-11A before the most recent A11-AAA.

I think it's recent, but I've been seeing several pure white NJ license plates on the road for some time. On my Google findings, apparently, the city-data NJ board was talking about these back in 2009-2010ish?

(So if the state bird color isn't your thing, then the simple plain white version may be the one for you?)

I think the pure white license plates are the new version of temporary paper plates you get when you buy a car. We used to get the ones that looked like a certificate and taped onto the back window, so I think these are the new temps, out there where you can see them a lot easier. Some of the old temps, if you had a tinted back window where not very readable.
