I don't think they should be reimbursing them for anyone but where it's medically necessary. It's a luxury to have a generator. This storm is going to cost billions of dollars, the last thing we need is to be buying everyone a generator on top of it.

The number of generators paid for with taxpayer dollars is so small that it isn't even a blip on the spreadsheet.

Think about it this way. If that $500 generator* isn't supplied, then the person is probably going to have to be admitted to a hospital or skilled care facility until the power comes back on. Which will cost the taxpayer less?

*For something like a nebulizer or small fridge to store insulin you can get a small generator for under $150. FEMA isn't paying for whole house standby generators for anyone.

I think that's 100% fine. But not for people who got them for comfort alone like OP suggested.

im not going to think about it that way. i will think about it in the way that people will spend their own money on the things they need or in this instance let their health insurance provider reimburse them.

And what about the disabled or retirees who are on MediCare?

You can think about it any way you want, but the reality is that it's less expensive to provide a generator for people who need one for medical reasons than it is to provide for their care on an institutional basis.

so let the payer reimburse for the service. the federal government is my money but there are different buckets and the money should come from the appropriate bucket.

I understand what you are saying but think it's ridiculous. Just more bureaucracy for the tax payers to pay for.
