I thought you were buying in Scotch Plains?

Most EB commuters take the bus to NYC that leaves from the parking deck buy the Hilton. Can take a long time just to get into the deck to to traffic snarls in the area around the Hilton/TPKE entrance. Depending on where you are in EB it could be half an hour from your house to there. The bus is an express and takes about an hour to Port Authority.

There's another park & Ride at Route 18 & Tices Lane that would be more convenient for people on that side of EB.

The big question is traffic. A bad accident on the Turnpike or bad weather and you could be seeing two hour delays.

I don't know if there is a waiting list for either location, I do know they have first come first served daily slots and I never had a problem getting one of those when I took the bus.

Schools are considered very good.

No idea about day care although there are a number of them in that town. Again you're going to run into extended hours situations. Some offer them at additional cost, some don't.

yes, SP was on my list but after some good info from you and taking into account the train changes involved and having a chat with my wife, we have started to consider towns that offer a direct train/bus service.
i think our problem is that we both need to work in nyc and have a baby who needs day care.
i think i might have to settle for towns with good commute and decent elementary and middle schools, later on we would need to move again when he is ready for high school.

frankly speaking this situation is making it difficult to narrow down on towns for house hunting.
thanks again for the info.

Both towns would have comparable commute time to NYC. If both parents work in NYC and need to do day care pickup/dropoff, it can get brutal.

EB and scotch plains would have the same commute to the city, but the difference is the bus is much more frequent to EB and schools are great here so definitely a good choice
