I've been reading all the past forums on walkable downtowns in NJ, lots of excellent information.

We are looking to relocate from California to somewhere within roughly a half hour drive of Edison, NJ. My wife's parents live there, and she would be working in Manhattan (she would be opening a division office, so could influence the location). She would like to be within an hour commute to NYC, preferably by train.

We have dogs, two young kids, and would like a four bedroom house. Price up to 1.3 million.

Here are our priorities:

1) Location mentioned above
2) Walkable downtown - doesn't have to be big, but needs to have housing within a 15-20 minute walk.
3) Safe - a place where you could walk alone at 10 PM and not have to think about it.
4) Charming - either natural beauty or nice-looking architecture downtown.
5) Sidewalks - in Edison a large number of roads don't have sidewalks, which would be pretty annoying when walking our dogs. Not sure if that is common in New Jersey or not.

Things that would be nice:

1) Good public schools
2) Whole Foods or grocery store along those lines within a reasonable drive
3) Train station to NYC in the town itself

It would be nice to get a list together of a few cities to visit the next time we are in New Jersey in three months. We would be looking to move in one year.

If the location is too narrow, we could go up to 45 minutes away from Edison, but the closer the better.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Didn't think that was a requirement; it certainly is still under an hour with the transfer.

I agree with the people that recommended Metuchen and Highland Park, but homes there can be quite pricey. I am surprised no one mentioned the Clara Barton area of Edison. OK it does not compare to these, but there are a few little things there. Woodbridge has a small downtown area too.

Fair points, but regarding "quite pricey", note OP's budget is up to $1.3 million.
