this is one of those moments that always seems to happen to other people and not me. jerks tend to give a hard time to people they perceive as weaker. it makes me so angry sometimes when i hear of someone being rude to my mother in law because she is an easy target.

when i think of bad tippers there are usually 2 groups that come to my mind first. in this case, i dont believe heather was referring to old people.

I don't understand why we have to tip? When I was traveling in HK and China, tip is never a requirement. Tip is some thing given for someone who take the extra miles.

while i am opposed to the practice, server compensation is dependent on tipping. i wouldnt punish a waiter because of my beliefs. so i play along with the current system and im generally a good tipper. id rather the server get an all inclusive salary and let the restaurant be responsible for the quality of service.

the server is compensated according to the country's custom. in the us, they earn a few bucks an hour in wages and rely on tips to make up the rest of their income. in other areas, they make a set amount and tipping is not expected. other countries, you just round the bill up to the nearest whole dollar and leave some change. it's one reason why some foreign visitors are such lousy tippers when they visit the states. they're unfamiliar with local custom.
