We (me, husband and 3.5 yrs old kid) are planning to move out from Edison, where we rent currently.
We are looking for
- good public schools
- easy commute to NYC (mid town).
- condo/townhouse in the range of 350-400K - (min. 3 bedroom + 2 bath)
- neighborhood: families with young children, close-nit community and safe
Analysis done so far:
Metuchen - schools are very good. commute is easy. But, homes are very old and new construction is out of our budget.
Holmdel/middletown/marlboro - Schools are very good. Home do meet our criteria. But, we are not sure about commute to NYC.
The Homes are nice in Metuchen , old isn't always bad.... Alot of these Newer (1950s+) Construction is tacky and cheap , compared to the older housing stock (1790s-1940s).

old is pretty much always bad.
i think you could probably find some townhomes in that price range in the areas of middletown, marlboro and holmdel. that would be for the older less nice ones. that fact probably will reduce the amount of young families in them and then the close tight nit nature of the community. thats one good thing about new construction, many people are in the same stage in life and all of them are new to the community.
you may be able to get something in laurel greene for that price range and its only a few miles away from the middletown train station.

Not really , How do you know...have you owned or lived in an old home before?
strip malls = "high quality of life". that's a new one.
its funny to see people use the term "strip mall" as if its some terrible and evil thing. its just a bunch of stores. it neither guarantees a high quality of life or prevents a high quality of life. places like holmdel, middletown and marlboro have strip malls and are great places to raise children and have a high quality of life.
i like it when people have some kind of emotional reaction to certain phrases like "strip mall." something so simple and harmless as a collection of stores actually gets an instant negative response when those two words are said. it demonstrates the success that some people have had in controlling the thoughts and opinions of others.
