Paterson has the advantages of having the Passaic County Courthouse, the Federal Building, the Passaic County Jail, Passaic County Community College and St. Joseph's Medical Center. It does help keep Paterson lively in a very healthy way. Unfortuntely, Passaic doesn't have those type of places and it does make a big difference.
Wasn't it a very thriving city in the 50's and 60's? If it wasn't for all of the crime, would it still be an aesthetically pleasing city? I guess now that some parts are rundown, probably not as much.
Do not confuse the Passaic of the 1950s and 1960s to that of Franklin Lakes or Alpine. You can pick up a good description of Passaic from the 1930s from the WPA series (one for every state). The part of Passaic by the river (where my grandfather was from) was described as being filled with newly-arrived immigrants living in overcrowded tenements. So don't think everything was so rosy in Passaic before the 1970s. Perhaps it was a bit better, there were jobs for the unskilled workforce. However, due to dependence on industry, Passaic was never an affluent city.
I see. It has always been a strictly blue collar city with a long history of immigrants. Cities like Paterson, Newark and Passaic could have great potential, it's a shame that they're in such a way. I hope something is done in the near future. Hoboken used to be a dump, but now it got fixed up really well.
Passaic is a blue collar urban area yes it cheap there but not my choice to live there i rather live in Greenville Jersey City then Passaic. Its also not the best looking town or baddest at day its safe in city area at night its desolated. Certain areas are rough and have hints of urban decay my suggestion go to Clifton better town.
The best thing about Passaic was the Capitol Theatre- and they torn that down yrs ago
Look at Clifton/Little Falls/ maybe woodland Park- - a bigger bang for your buck
