Our track record in NJ for electing folks that turn out pretty slimey is undeniable. Don't overestimate the electorate.

At this point it seems around 50/50 whether or not Menendez gets indicted on ethics violations. Even then, there is no guarantee he will lose his Senate seat, though most in that position resign. Assuming Menendez is indicted and resigns in the next couple of months, Christie will get to appoint an interim. However, that interim will only serve until a special election can be held to fill the vacancy, which would happen in November of this year. I don't know of any names among the Republicans that would really stand a chance in a general election, even if they were running next to Christie on the ticket. Given that fact, any appointment would basically an honorarium as the person would only serve for a few months and certainly wouldn't be a factor on any committees. Most likely you would see Booker enter the race and be a virtual lock on winning. That would then open the field among the Democrats to replace Lautenberg in 2014.
