Hi,

I would be moving to new jersey/new york this July to work Hudson street, jersey city close to the bay.
I'm currently trying to figure out how much would an apartment cost in good areas and what would the good areas be?

Good areas would mean safe and easy commute with easy access to the public transit and path.

And how easy is it to find roommates if I had to go for an apartment way over my budget
my budget would be somewhere between $500-$800. But if i can reduce it by getting a roommate It can still work.

Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately, with that type of budget, the only way that you will be able to live in the area is to share an apartment with one or two people. Rents in NJ tend to be higher than many other parts of the US, and in Jersey City, rental costs have been inflated to a very great extent.

Try the Journal Square neighborhood in Jersey City. $800/month is doable if you rent an apartment or house with 2-3 other people, and there are a lot of people out there looking for roommates. You definitely won't be able to manage to stay within that budget living alone, though.

what are the rents like for apartments in and around Jersey city considering I would be renting out an apartment along with 2 or 3 people?

Depends dramatically on where you're looking in Jersey City (let alone neighboring towns) and also on the condition of the apartment. But $2400/month for a three-bedroom is not at all unrealistic around Journal Square, which is the best value neighborhood in Jersey City (cheap and close to transit, not visually attractive but not dangerous). Try talking to a broker in the Journal Square area, or just look for apartments on Craigslist.

I know someone who rents an apartment for $800. It's only 2 rooms but it is very spacious. It is the top floor of a house also, so there is some privacy.

Just look around and I'm sure you'll find something for your max of $800.
