My fiancée & I want to have a simple civil wedding ceremony. The original plan is to be sworn in by the judge in my township’s courthouse, but we just found out our township only does that one day a week and it won’t work for us schedule wise.

What are my alternatives for a simple civil wedding in Somerset County? We only have a few guests and want to keep things short & breif. Also, I am wondering if we can go to another courthouse/city hall that’s different from the township we filed our marriage application with?

Chester County PA has a self appointed marriage, meaning you can both just fill out the paperwork and submit. In theory no officient is required just one witness. I believe this is legal in any state but the paperwork needs to be filed at the Chester County PA court house (West Chester PA) outside Philly then mailed in.

It may be an option but requires the paperwork to be filed and mailed there. Think can be recieved in minutes there

Not sure if this helps but thought it might be an option for you

You don't need to do the civil ceremony in your courthouse. Look in the Yellowpages for "Justice of Peace." Most will charge a $150+ fee for their time. You can do it whenever or wherever you want, as long as the ceremony is administered and your license signed by a Justice of Peace.

Congrats!

I searched on Google and can't seem to find one 'Justice of Peace' in Somerset county. Are they that hard to find? Do these guys have a venue for the wedding or I need to find my own venue first?

Why do you need to stay in Somerset county? As long as your license was from the town hall in Somerset, and you bring your signed license back to the town hall to file, you shouldn't have a problem getting married by anyone anywhere in NJ?

A quick google search reveals a bunch of links, however you need to do the legwork to contact them.

... etc.

And yes you are responsible for planning your wedding, including venue, food, entertainment, etc. if you choose to. The officiant will only administer the vows and sign your license. This is the same if you go the courthouse route... You will find it hard to "hold your wedding" in the court house, usually a few close friends and family go to the courthouse with you and then then everyone else joins up for a reception later.

We went to the courthouse on a Friday morning with 2 witnesses. The judge stood there as we did our "I Do's" and signed the papers. We then had a party/reception on Saturday at a banquet hall. Food, DJ, open bar, etc.
