What would that player's edge, or lack of one, be in live play as opposed to online play?
Well with cards, it's possible to count the cards to tilt the odds in your favor. Even just keeping track of the face cards (and 10's) can give you a small edge. With online / video poker the computer can reshuffle the deck every turn, eliminating any edge you might have.
but that's beside the point - we allow people to declare bankruptcy, and that's not going to change.
It is so much harder to declare bankruptcy today as it was let's say 10 years ago.. A viewer asked me to go to a bankruptcy lawyer with them and do a segment on it.. And to tell they truth as bad off as they were they still didn't qualify to file.
Wow some serious misunderstanding of poker in this thread. Players can absolutely have an edge live or online. I've come out significantly ahead in my "career" in both venues. Card-counting is not part of poker, that matters for blackjack. In poker the deck is reshuffled every hand, live or online. The reason you can have an edge live or online, is that you are playing against the other players, not the house. The house simply pockets a small % of every pot to ensure their profit, and thus making it so only about 10-20% of players can win in the long-run, as opposed to 50%.

i know that, but ppl still can declare and be approved. and if they don't qualify it doesn't mean they'll pay the bills - we've seen it with the foreclosure crisis.

from watching talk shows where people talk about bankrupcty issues, ive come to see that many of them eat at restaurants when they really cant afford to. so lets make it illegal for people to eat at restaurants.

If I'm playing poker against you and I can watch your betting patterns and your physical demeanor and behavior, I will soon be able to make very educated guesses about what you are holding and how you are playing. There are also other dynamics at play in a live setting, such as who is tilting, who is reacting to someone else's tilting, who is reacting to someone else's style of play, who is an amateur, who is experienced, who is tired, who is alert, who is broke and who is adequately bankrolled. This just scratches the surface, but there are thousands of edges attainable in a live game based on metagame considerations, game dynamics, personalities and their interaction with each other, etc.
Online you have nothing, except perhaps a HUD display that exposes some statistical trends, but nothing close to what you can glean in a live setting.
Also, optimal play in the online setting is now a matter of common and widespread knowledge. The players are just plain better and don't make the fundamental mistakes with sufficient frequency for the player of normal talent to exploit.
To win online, you now have to be really good, really alert, and outfitted with technology, experience, and knowledge to assess player trends. For most players, winning online is no longer possible. A very few super dedicated and super talented pros can still win. But for the typical player, nothing is possible except losses.
im pretty sure nj has already spent the anticipated revenue (just kidding, i hope)
but there is a difference. a lot of regular folk would be willing to gamble online with a us based casino that follows us regulations and is accountable here in america for any problems. i have looked into international betting web sites for some sports bets and ultimately was too nervous dealing with an overseas gambling operation. so i dont think overseas places will be able to compete for the average user with established american based companies.
This describes me, but with sports betting vs. online gambling. I know it is easy to gamble on sports already and a lot of people do, but I would be afraid to if it wasn't an "official" and legal way, so I don't. If they get it in AC I will be there on several Sundays every football season though, lol.
