I'm graduating this June and will be relocating sometime in July/Aug to NJ from SoCal (School in Santa Barbara, grew up in Los Angeles).
I will be working in Piscataway and trying to figure out where I should live. Since I will not know anyone there, I am mainly looking for a place with a good nightlife and young professional community. Also, anywhere that has nearby outdoor activities would be a plus.
Hoboken and Morristown come up a lot when I ask for suggestions on where to live, but not sure how that commute would be. I've also read that New Brunswick has a pretty good nightlife/young professional community, but it's never been a place that's come up when I've asked people for suggestions.
I guess my main question is if it would really be worth the commute to live in Hoboken or Morristown? Would New Brunswick be anywhere near comparable to either of those two cities?
Budget: 1400-2000/month, not opposed to having roommates
3 things I'm looking for: Nightlife, young professional community, outdoor/sports activities
And while New Brunswick has some parks and the Raritan River running through it, it's a small city and not filled with big parks. You're about 40 minutes from the beach down Route 18 though which is a bonus. Hoboken & Morristown are twice as far to get to the Jersey shore.
If you like sports, Rutgers is moving to the Big 10 in 2014 so you'll be able to see big-time football & basketball there before you know it.

Hoboken commute would $uck. I hear New Brunswick is a good town for young folks. I lived in Morristown so I can say from firsthand experience it is a great town. It has lots of nearby parks for running, softball, frisbee, whatever. Great downtown surrounded by three colleges so there are some fun things to do in the area (downtown Morristown and Madison specifically). And if you end up going to Hoboken, it's only like a 45 to 50 minute car ride from Morristown. Highly recommend you check out Morristown.
New Brunswick would be fine for your night life~if you didn't want to live in New Brunswick, you could also live/look for rentals in Somerset, East Brunswick, Highland Park, North Brunswick, Milltown or Piscataway itself. More open space for outdoor activities, community parks, health clubs or gyms etc in the suburbs. Perhaps the company you are working for has a relocation specialist that could recommend a realtor or some apartment complexes? The areas around the college tend to be catered to student housing~but there are plenty of others in around the area that would give you easy access to roads/trains/bus to NYC, Hoboken, "the shore" and all the amenities you would need; grocery stores, car maintenance, doctors etc. All of the suburbs mentioned would be a 10-15 minute drive into New Brunswick for the "night life" and depending on where in Piscataway you are working, a work commute of 10-30 minutes.
