If you'll be driving, consider Maplewood and South Orange -- both attractive, safe towns with nice downtowns. Public transit wouldn't be too bad, about half an hour, but would involve transfers.
The rental market is very tight these days. You might line up an extended-stay hotel for a month while you learn your way around.
In Newark you really have to know the neighborhoods before renting there. Try Belleville or Nutley. They are right on the outskirts and still pretty safe for the most part.
Thanks for the info... I'm still searching and digging through a BUNCH of info...
What about Englewood? The train ride isn't terrible... not sure what the actual "in traffic" drive time would be... I will probably drive to work as often as I take the train...
Pretty much little to no traffic between Englewood and Newark. Slight backup at the meadowlands tolls - Half hour drive. There is no train in Englewood.

Englewood has a decent amount of traffic , Newark is a backup point like New York so its at least 45-60mins...you first have to deal with the Tunnel back up and then Newark congestion...which is getting worse and worse every year with the New jobs opening up and general growth in Downtown...

Look in Hackensack , River Edge , Rutherford , are good areas to look into all within a 25-35min train ride to Newark ; Kearny , Belleview , North Arlington are about 10-15min bus ride to Newark and Harrison right over the Bridge.

This pretty much. 25 (little traffic, mild speeding) to 45 (heavy traffic, minor accident/construction work) minutes is the general timeframe, with 30-35 being what you'd expect usually. Granted construction or accidents can cause more in theory/rarely but that's true everywhere you're on the road.
Hackensack is another solid option. Town can be run down in parts but if you're looking for somewhere safe to sleep, a decent apartment at a decent price, parking/transit etc. it will do the trick. Travel time to Newark will be about the same as Englewood, and you'll get more bang for your buck in terms of the apartment itself (although the downtown area isn't nearly as nice, so if that is of importance to you Englewood is the better call).
Check out Middlesex county. There is a train in South Amboy that will take you straight to Newark Penn Station. There are some nice rentals in Parlin/Sayreville in a development named LaMer. New townhomes and apartments have just gone up and are rentals. South Amboy is coming up also, no real crime, easy commute, diverse community, 40 mins to NYC, really close to Jersey shore. 1hr 45min to Atlantic city. Look for town on the North jersey coastline train schedule from New Jersey Transit. Even Monmouth county which is the next county south from middlesex is nice. Red bank is a nice town too.
