So i got fed up with two consecutive years of rate increases from Liberty Mutual, so I shopped it around this year.

Interestingly, I also recently saw this article (Report: Auto Premiums Lower in Caldwells, West Essex - Caldwells, NJ Patch)

Anyways, Liberty for 2 cars 2 yrs ago was $2300/yr. they raised me to 2500 last year, and wanted to raise me to 2700 this year. I have auto, home, and umbrella all with them.

So i shopped. My home insurance is the same price, but more coverage, umbrella dropped by $80, and auto dropped by $900. What was shocking though was the range of auto quotes i got.

Metflife: $3800
Traveler's: $3500
State Farm: $3200
Liberty: $2711
Geico: $1900

that's insane?!

My recommendation - GO SHOP FOR NEW INSURANCE PRONTO, no matter who you currently have.

i pay $1891 a year right now for geico. ive been using them since i moved back to nj and ive periodically gotten quotes to compare and they always are the lowest.

nah, we're paying about $1600 for 3 cars with NJM and I've been with them for 23 years and their customer service is outstanding. even if i saved $100 with geico (which is unlikely) i wouldn't switch - who the hell knows what you're getting into if you have a claim. i also get checks back from njm every year which is schweet.

eta - it's about $1350 for 2 cars - our third is insured by Haggerty. oops.

it's funny though, because a few years ago i left geico for metlife for a cheaper quote. but as long as you periodically shop it, then you're ok. I'm gonna take a defensive driving course this weekend online and it knocks another 10% off our rate.

i've heard NJM is cheapest, but once you have a claim, they do everything they can to get rid of you. Not sure if that's true or not.

As long as you're with one of the big insurance companies, i'm really not that concerned about what i'm getting into if i have a claim - they all operate pretty much the same way. I've had experience with Geico's customer service though, they are outstanding.

we've had about 5 claims - 2 for totaled cars and we've never been dropped.

i've also gotten about 4? speeding tickets, maybe 4 points on my license at one time and they never said boo.

generally if you don't have NJM I'd shop around. NJM honestly is the only company I've ever dealt with that I would defend to the death. The rest can go pound salt.

they have the big cup of coffee. ive been happy with their customer service also.

im not sure if ive done a quote from njm, maybe ill run one soon. im always interested in paying less.

so they knock 10% off your total if you take a class?

Tahiti, I have 3 vehicles with NJM and I'm well over 2K, with a clean driving record. Two vehicles are fairly new and one is oldish. Are your vehicles older? You're paying a good price!

each driver has to take it. so my wife and i will both take it. 10% comes off, and the class stays on record for 3 yrs. class costs maybe $30 online.

as for NJM, my friend got a quote and it was more expensive than Geico, and our friend told us the dividend check they send is tiny.

that's not to say NJM isn't worth it - i'm just encouraging people to shop around and see what's out there. given the range of quotes i got, that tells me many people are obviously overpaying.

yes they are older, we are in our 40's and we live in a semi-rural area which helps bring the cost down. i have 2 BOYS turning 17 in 2 years, check back with me then on my "cheap" rate!
