What is the typical cost to have a vehicle inspected at a privately owned garage? I got a quote today of $80 which seems high. If I go to the state agency I will likely have to take time off from work which I'm trying to avoid.

You can go to a state agency on Saturday, if that works.

Just a reminder that auto inspection for NJ is just for emission. It should not take long at the state facilities. There are better time of the days and time to go depending on your location.

If you live in the following county:

Cape May
Salem
Washington

You can make an appointment for the state inspection.

If you go to the state agencies, go on a weekday, really early in the morning. Most of the northeast facilities open around 7-8am, be there at 15 min before open to no later than 1 hour after opening, you should be in and out fairly quickly and only be at work later than usu.

Do NOT go on a weekend oh goodness. I waited almost 2 hours two Saturdays ago at the Secaucus facility to have them stick an inspection stick on my windshield that said "No Idling! Think Green!" or something like that. Irony at its best.

not sure where you live but some of them have "live cams" you can view to see the line. i live close to the edison location and the 2 times i went i was in and out in about 15 minutes. Also, state inspection is free.

Two years ago it cost me $60 or $65, IIRC. As others have noted, the lines at the state places are not like they were and not at all bad if you go the second or third week of the month. Last October at Paramus I was waved in immediately. No line at all. In and out in 10 minutes and that was with an older, pre OBD II vehicle.

the Roseland and Wayne locations aren't terrible on a Saturday. They used to let you schedule a time but I don't think you can anymore.

I find that if you hit the state inspection stations as soon as they open (as in, arrive 15 minutes before they open and be first in line) that you can be through in 10 minutes. I've been driving for 15 years and have never paid to have a car inspected.
