Update- seen plenty. A mile away they are thick; noisy and flying around. I guess they need such big numbers b ecause they are one of the worst evolved animals to avoid predators. They crawl slowly from ground, then are poor fliers with bid red eyes that are essentialy targets.
I was driving home from work going north on Rt 287 and from about exit 23 to 33ish, I heard this tremendously loud high pitched buzzing. Mind you, I'm going 80mph, had the windows shut plus talk radio going on and I could clearly hear this really loud noise like I've never heard in my life. At first I thought there was something wrong with my car but as I opened my window I noticed a bunch of them flying everywhere in the woods. 4 or 5 of them went splat on my windshield...
I'm used to the annual cicadas but these things are a whole different bowl of wax... Here I thought all the news stories about these 17 year cicadas were a bunch of bs. Thankfully they haven't been seen in my town (yet).
Driving on 287, heading north of 78, I had this same experience today. Turned off the radio to listen because I thought I had a leak in a hose or something else wring with the car. Didn't see any, but lowered the windo and heard them better and the lightbulb went on.
Starting to hear more of the mating calls, both M. septindecim and M. cassini. I also got to hear an M. cassini alarm call when one flew into my shirt.
