So I know this isnt some sort of lawyer advice website, but I want to know if anybody can point out what I did wrong/ what crime was committed.

I was charged with improper passing.
I was coming up to a T intersection, from the bottom of the T, and it was a red light. As you approach the lights, the single lane road opens into a 2 lane road, right side for right turns, left side for left turns. So i had to make a right turn, I turn signaled into the right lane, and a cop pulls out from the left lane to go behind me on the right lane.

There were 2 cars ahead of me and 6 ahead of him,
2 in the right lane
6 in the left lane.

He pulls me over shortly after green, and scolds at me as to how the way i passed everyone is completely inappropriate...

UM..... Im not even leaving anything out, it seriously happened like that...

What did I do wrong?

A) You probably did nothing wrong.
B) Only crime here is we allow cops to harass people and write tickets.
C) Nothing will much matter in so called court except whatever deal you work out for what amount of money you deposit at the cashier's window on the way out.

Union, NJ,,, you think this is America or something?

It all depends how corrupt or honest the local cash register system is. I would suggest the usual chit-chat with the local prosecutor they usually herd every victim in front of and explain what you just said and see if he/she will give you a "deal" other than the standard one they give everybody.

Not sure, did you ask for an explanation? If the line of cars turning left went back 6+ cars, this may have been far enough back that you were in a part of the road that was still just a single lane... so passing on the right would have been illegal until the turn lane officially began.

Im definitely going to contest it, and bring a whole slew of pictures, and a printout of the actualy improper passing law.

If he argues that I came in at a high rated speed, then I would just state as to how I was not marked for speeding... Plus... speeding at a red light... makes sense.
I have more in my defense but choose to not put it here

Ha! If it was me, I would have made a quick right onto Girard Pl and avoided the light altogether to make a right onto Morris Ave.

One thing in NJ, almost everyone does it, but it is technically illegal, is that no driver is allowed to use the portion of the roadway to the right side of a painted line, on the shoulder, even if paved, to pass another vehicle. I know this is silly and 99 out of 100 times all of us pass someone turning to the left by driving over the line on the right. It is technically ruled illegal by state law.
It is written up in that particular NJ law as a court determination.

Now the point about fighting a traffic ticket in NJ is most cases don't even get to that point.
First of all the court date written on the ticket is when you have to advise the court 3 days BEFORE that you are pleading not guilty. then they mail you a new court date.

At that one they usually have you talk to the court prosecutor and he offers you a deal they give to everyone where you pay about $485 and they call it a no-point unsafe driving. You can only have 2 of these in 5 or 10 years and they still show up as a no point unsafe driving ticket on your record.

If you can, ask for something that is no points and has no record like "obstructing traffic" and is about $90, but usually they wont let you have that unless they want to get rid of your case.

If you don't agree to any of these then they usually reschedule you to come in again for a trial where the officer who wrote the ticket is supposed to appear. Usually at another date.

No, not illegal to make the right. That is posted and painted for such movement there. You mentioned iillegal passing, it would be illegal to use the shoulder of the road further back up the street to get into the right lane, IF that was the case.
