Old thread but I found this thread with a google search. I live in NJ but I have relatives in Hawaii so I snorkel there when I visit and it's unreal. I was looking into anything available here in NJ, I know the choices are limited.

But looks like freshwater lakes may be worth looking into. Round Valley Reservoir looks promising. My brother in law is a Scuba instructor and taught a few re-breather sessions at Round Valley. It's over 100 feet deep and really clear. I fished there a few times and you can see straight to the bottom in 20-30 feet of water. It's probably cold though and the fish you will see are Bass, Sunny's, maybe some Trout. There's actually a few videos on YouTube that give a good idea of the conditions.

It is known as the Bermuda Triangle of NJ as some people who drowned in the lake were never found. But when you have to check the website as to what you need, you have to check in and out and you will never a dive flag I believe.

I also have seen people Scuba Diving in Manasquan inlet near the route 35 bridge. I assume the water must be somewhat clear and I'm guessing it's a scuba class.

Also, Dutch Springs in PA is a big scuba spot and I think they allow snorkeling as well.

While NJ isn't the best place for snorkeling it's not a total lost cause. In the ocean it all depends on conditions. I was in Ocean Grove one Summer day and the water was CRYSTAL Clear, the conditions were just right. Of course there's not much to see but a fish were swimming around.
