By all means take Rte 206, not only does it save you quite a few miles, (~20) but you also avoid the congestion in Morristown, and the area of the rte 24 exchange as well as the hassle that is the 287/rte 80 interchange. The 287/80 intersection is known for frequent tie ups, no matter the time of day. Since you will be presumably going non rush, you will not have the delays on 206 that occur during rush. (though there will be some school traffic in the mid afternoon). That stretch of 206 is a nice well maintained road with not many traffic lights, pretty scenic too. Just be sure to mind your speed...the towns are known to frequently tickets speeders. I recommend getting off 287 at the Bedminster 206N exit, rather than the 202/206 exit, its just after the rte 78 interchange, just my personal preference.

That is also 202/206 - it splits about 1 mile up the road just north of AT&T. It's Exit 22B.
Is anyone familiar with this road? Is it better to just take 287 from the GSP all the way to route 80 W? My GPS keeps telling me to get off and take route 202 to 206 when going to my aunt's house in PA but I'm skeptical of a road I have never traveled just to cut a few miles off my trip. I won't be traveling at rush hour.
Thanks!
Take 206. Off hours it's not an issue. Get off 287N at Exit 22B, keep left at the 202/206 split, and 80 is about 20 miles(?) up the road. You'll hit only a handful of lights (9 by my calculation but a few are right on top of each other).
Thanks for the info. I'm coming from south of the Driscoll Bridge (I get on the GSP in Brick) and my aunt lives in Cresco (Pocono area near Ceasars - get off the Scot Run exit on 80). My uncle passed away on Sat am and I've been driving back and forth to help her and I'm trying to take the best route. I saw the route for I-78 to 33 but last time I was on there I remembered a lot of construction and it is about 10 miles more than taking 206.
I will download that app and see if it helps. I'll try 206 today - leaving now. I'll report back when I get home. Maybe I'll try 33 to 78 home and time them both.
I used the GSP - 287 - 78 - 33 - 80 route and it did cut about 20 - 30 minutes off the commute. Going was no problem but coming home the construction on 78 was horrendous Monday night and then on 287 both Mon and Wed night (got a pet sitter and stayed overnight Tues). They were forcing everyone into one lane and it seemed to take forever but I was also exhausted so I'm sure it wasn't half as bad as it felt. Still about 20 min faster.
And boy has that Waze app come a long way! I used it a few years ago and it was horrible so I deleted it and I tried it again at BradyKP's suggestion and it was wonderful! SO much better than google! Google navigation is awful sometimes.
Thanks for all the advice - it helped tremendously!
For future reference to those traveling in the area, that stretch of 206 is horrendous during rush hour. North from Bedminster towards Peapack is often a standstill, as is going down the hill from Chester into Flanders/Roxbury.
A little off-topic, but it is so frustrating that northwest Jersey lacks a good north-south highway. It's sad that a 45 mile drive from Chester to the state capital takes 90 minutes. Sure, 40 years ago that region was mostly rural, but recently there's been a lot of population growth in western Morris, southern Sussex, and northern Somerset counties. Parts of 202 and 31 are fairly fast moving...an actual limited access highway would be nice though. Won't ever happen of course.
You should take 206 except during rush hour , going to rt 80 is very slow! If you take rte 287 to 80 you end up getting on 80 further East. Not good going to rte 80. I live at the intersection of 206 and Pottersville road, Rte 80 is 13 miles from here

Hoping someone local could give a sense of what the Wednesday before Thanksgiving will be like? Starting from New Brunswick and heading (way) west on to Michigan. With work requirements precluding an earlier start time, I'm likely leaving NB around 4pm. Suggestions for the least misery potential?
Google suggests 287/206/80, but those one-lane stretches on 206 and the already-mentioned rush hour congestion sound rough.
Is 287/78/33/80 a better option? Something truly National Lampoon's Vacation inspired like 287/22/31/46/80? Game-time decision based on traffic as I leave?
Guess I'd rather sit in scenic standstill, if all misery will likely be equal. Not worried about tolls for this one--shortest potential time is the goal.
Unfortunately holiday traffic is going to be bad no matter which way you go. It is also the beginning of Hanukkah on Wednesday. My only suggestion is to wait until after rush hour before you leave rather than sit in rush hour traffic.
