I am posting this both here and the employment board...

After a year of starting the process to get employment with the state, I finally got an interview last month. It couldn't come at a better time, since I had lost my job 2 weeks prior. I had the interview and it went well. The gentleman said they would call me either way, but I could call the next week too follow up.

I followed up, and received positive feed back from one of the people that conducted the interview. She said that I could call back the next week to see how the process is going.

I did, and the gentleman said that they were filling out paperwork to do the background/info check, and that I could call back within the next week to see how things are coming along. He used language that indicated that I may have the job, but it was just a formality to do the paperwork and what not.

I called today, and was told to call back within a half hour to speak to the person handling the hiring. When I did, he had left for the day.

My concerns are these:

How long does it generally take from interview to getting the official word that you have been hired?
and
Am I coming off as pushy/desperate calling every week? This will be the 3rd week I've called to follow up... I'm afraid I'm coming off as needy and desperate. My friend tried to reassure me that it is fine to call once a week, especially since they said to call back, but I'm starting to wonder.

My feeling is this. Stop calling. You've shown interest in getting hired with your calls to date. Future calls are not helping you get hired. It is understandable that you are dying to hear but rest assured they will call you once everything is either approved or denied. Calling is not going to speed up the decision making process and you could end up sounding a little desperate.

You've done everything right to date. Good interview and follow up. Don't follow up any more(or at least wait 2 weeks to do so again). I'm not saying it will hurt you, but it could.

The best practice is to go on about your life like you didn't get the job until an official offer is made.

(I have 20 employees, I hire and fire regularly)

Don't know about the State but I worked for a very large company decades ago and they normally took several months to about a half year to go through the formalities to hire a person. I had the job and had more qualifications than anyone else so the department really wanted me in, but the HR department still goes through its routine.

Thanks for the feed back. I guess I will call back after I come back from vacation if I don't hear anything from them. The man doing the interview said that I should fax over the receipt for my vacation and they would use that as a sign of good faith and hold the position open for me, just in case I am unable to answer (I am going out of the country and my phone will not work in the middle of the ocean. lol... Also I am taking the bold part as another sign that they want me). So come July 7th, I will call them.

I really hope it doesn't take months to get word if I have the job. It's already been more than a year since I first started this process. Here's to hoping it picks up steam!

I work for a large company and it often takes HR weeks to sometimes 2 months to approve a hire once the hiring manager submits their decision. I imagine the state would take at least the same.

as someone said - you've shown your interest and enthusiasm, further calls likely won't do any benefit for you, and could potentially harm, so I'd just wait.

good luck!
