Does anyone find this surprising? We are 49th in terms of beer consumption, behind only Connecticut and Utah. I thought we drank a lot of beer. Montana takes the #1 spot.
- Crap alcohol laws mean buying beer is as much hassle as wine/hard liquor, unlike in many states where beer is available at every convenience store, while you have to go somewhere for the wine/liquor. Additionally, with NJ liquor licensing, not every food establishment, or even the majority of them, sell beer. Again, unlike many other states.
- Wealthier state - Probably means more consumption of wine and liquor than buying 36-packs of cheap beer.
- Ethnic backgrounds - Definitely more Italians, Jews, and people of a Slavic/Eastern European background than in most parts of the country, all of whom are people who are culturally inclined towards other types of alcohol instead of beer.
There's also a lot of Asians, who while they drink beer, metabolize it differently, and they can't drink anywhere near the quantity that White people usually can. 2-3 drinks for them is often like double or triple that is for the average White person.
I can't understand the beer consumption bragging that many beer drinkers like to talk about.
Beer drinking is not sport that requires a lot of talent. Many expert beer drinkers can be found leaving a bar at closing time crawling to their vehicles and attempting to open the door while on their knees.
I remember lots of guys bragging that they can consume a case on a Saturday and still drive home at night.
I will admit that I can't consume more then a few beers without getting a buzz, but isn't that what alcohol drinking is all about?
I pride myself that I can get buzzed much cheaper that some of my Irish friends.
So what you're trying to say is that were pretty almost the last state in this pole, 48 states ahead of us are more likely to get drunk before New Jersey people? Who came in after NJ?

NY believe it or not! I personally hate beer/ale. I prefer the malt beverages such as Mike's Hard Lemonade or Bacardi Raz when tailgating, out for one or two with friends, etc and prefer Bacardi Limon or Bacardi and coke with lime when I'm not driving.
I bet that more people drink the flavored malt beverages here than beer - that's probably what's skewering the results.
