I am coming to Jersey City for a 3 year construction project. I was wondering if anyone here can give me any scoop on the town. Is it a good place to stay or should I stay elsewhere? My project will be at the Hudson Power Plant.
Depends on how much you want to spend. Living in a decent area of JC is extremely expensive compared to many areas, as you're living with people who work in NYC and make some pretty fat salaries. What size apartment are you looking for, and how much are you looking to spend?
A decent sized place. I am in a small apartment here in Connecticut on my current position. I am paying $1200 a month here for a medium sized apartment.
JC Heights area is a decent area thats very diverse. You have all races of people and its fairly safe for a city standpoint. 1200 will definitely get you an apartment. My brother lives in a two family house and just rented out the first floor for 900. Downtown near the plant which is on the Hudson River is big bucks.
Streets and neighborhoods to stay away from:
Bergen ave, Ocean ave, Garfield ave, Duncan ave, .....if any apartment crosses one of those streets, I suggest avoiding it. Other then that, you'll find nice apartments.
I don't know what type of area you are use to living in. Downtown JC (where your plant is) is city living...very busy and the square foot is expensive. If you have a car and can drive to work in the morning, I would rent in Weehawken or along BLVD East and just drive in. It will take you 20 minutes to get to work, but you'll be going home to a quiet area and the rent will be cheaper. $1200 a month for a 1 bedroom in Downtown JC will not get you much. Drop me an email if you need more info.
