We're considering a move to Martinsville. How are the schools and crime in this town?

Martinsville (Bridgewater) has good schools and any "crime" (suburban kids doing stupid stuff) will be the last of your worries.

What are your overall thoughts on this area?

Typical upper-middle class NJ suburb. A bit dry, but a good place to raise a family.

schools are great
crime is negligible
if you can afford it, make the move

We have friends who live in Martinsville with their 8 and 6 year old and love it there. You are close to Rt 22 and Bridgewater for major shopping and the schools are good.
One thing I do find with them, is that they tend to go 'up the hill' to Basking Ridge for the YMCA and meet friends for lunch/dinner etc. That could be their preference though.
You tend to get more property for your money down there.
Good Luck!
