Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
(examples: families with young children, young, mature, artsy, diverse, safe, close-knit, block parties, etc) Looking for a diverse walkable and safe place. I have a car and would need some place to park, prefer off street parking. Also do not want to spend all day trying to get to work. I do that enough now. Would like to catch an express bus or walk to a train station.

List three things that are important to you in order of importance.(examples: nightlife, outdoor activities, rural/urban, safety, downtown area, charming, new construction, proximity to XYZ, family oriented, easy parking, short commute, etc) Short commute, safe, and diverse + parking

Montclair fits the criteria, though it will be tight with your housing budget. (the lower priced rentals tend to be in not so good neighborhoods.) great access to NYC via anyone of the five train stations. Another option more in line with your budget would be East Rutherford, or Rutherford. Of course the easiest commute would be from Jersey City, but again, be careful as there are some very unsafe areas in town, and the nicer areas are pricier.
