I know, but that would be too easy, also giving in to the toll roads, and most importantly I don't think anyone in or near Philadelphia would let you redesignate the Delaware Expressway I-95 to anything else. Too central and ingrained and Philly rightfully owns that.
My second plan doesn't add tolls (though states are going to be tolling _everything_ soon anyway, the Feds have already given in). As for Philly, their urbanistas would just love for I-95 to change designation, as it would make it easier for them to close it from I-76 to I-676 they way they want to.
It might make it easier to get from North Jersey to Philadelphia. I've never liked the Route 73/Route 90 connection to the Betsy Ross Bridge.
The way it is now if I'm going down the NJ TurnMyPike, I get off at I-195 (7A), take that west into NJ 29 then either US1 over the toll bridge or if you shunpike (avoid the tolls) one block away is the tollfree Trenton Makes alt US-1 bridge, then US-1 Freeway goes into I-95 to Philly and all the rest. Quick way to Philly from the NJ Pike.

may be cheaper but NJ Turnpike to exit 4, 73 to 90 to th Walt Whitman to 95 (or vice-versa) is by far the fastest way, with no traffic you can get from 676 in Philly to the Holland tunnel in about 1:10-15 minutes - again this assume no traffic and speeds (moving with traffic) at about 80- slow spot is 73 (a few lights and 90, dont speed they will actually ticket you there)

You also need to account for traffic jams near exit 8A, where the infamous turnpike merge & split occurs. There is always traffic along that portion. Overall, I feel that the ride would be closer to 2 hours long from Walt Whitman to Holland tunnel. You would be hard pressed to average more than 65 mph unless you drive early in the morning or late at night during the weekends.
Actually not much of any new roads to maintain in this project. Mostly it is ramps between existing roads. Eventually they want to dualize or expand the 2 lanes each way to 3 lanes on the Pennsy pike section, but I'm fairly certain West of there it's already been expanded years ago already.
so - those ramps...when snow falls on them, it melts automatically? no salting required? they aren't at risk of potholes? etc....????

Yes but connecting 2 major existing highways, instead of not connecting them, to make a continuous road? That like building a house and not putting a roof on it in my book.
Great news. I still dream of a north-south freeway in western North Jersey...it would be nice if it didn't take 90 minutes to go 45 miles to Trenton.
It would have been a lot easier if the Somerset Expressway (I-95) was built, but decades of history by now just says no one around here is building much of anything.
There was that big push back around the 60's and 70's when the Interstates got built all over. Since then things have reverted to planning and nothing. Even smaller roads like NJ 92 get swept under the rug. Also similar for transit.
I-95 through NJ I think kept getting swept under the rug by the invisible forces of the toll roads in NJ.

How would the Somerset Expressway have run - think that would make my life easier today, as I feeli like I spend half my week alond 287 from 202 to 80. Would be much easier than traversing 202/206/31/ etc back to 95
Depending on how far north I use the NJTK all the way to 14a and 78 to 22 many miles out of the way it would seem
Would have run from where the bend on I-95 is around Ewing NJ up to I-287 near Easton Ave and looking back when the detailed map was would have been about a 15 minute ride more or less,,,anyway, back to the real world.
