I'm a just-turned 34, recently single (broke up with girlfriend) guy who lives in central NJ (near Edison/Metuchen). I just got a job in Newark and am trying to figure out a place to live that offers more in terms of nightlife / meeting women. I used to live in NYC for a while and while it was great for dating I didn't meet any significant other there. Just no luck!
I feel stuck where I am and need to breathe some new life into my routine. I was thinking Hoboken / Jersey City but feel they might be too young, just-out-of-college. Montclair is interesting, as are certain neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Any thoughts on what could work? I like going out to bars, outdoor activities, networking events, etc.
Congratulations! Getting a job is a good start. However, if I were you, I would concentrate more in finding a place to live that is strategic and that makes economic sense for me. Moving to a place for dating purposes doesn't seem like a good idea "to me". With that said, try to meet/find/date/ women from places that you are already invoved in. I'm sure that outside of your day job, you must have a hobby or you must have any activities that are fun for you. Well, maybe you will able to find someone that can squeeze your lime in that type of setting. Needless to say, you may find someone with a common interest.
Thanks for the input - the only thing about a place like New Brunswick or Morristown is that I LOVE doing things in New York (especially related to my field), so I'm leery about being so far from the city.
OP mentioned the first places that came to my mind. Montclair and Jersey City. The Paulus Hook/Van Vorst Park area of JC has a lot more of the 30s-40s crowd than the emerging hipster bar area of Newark Ave. Go to the Light Horse Tavern or the Merchant instead of Barcade or Lucky 7.
Go to Morristown or Montclair and join the local Crossfit. You'll be married within 3 years.
I agree about the places you suggested especially Monclair for the OP. But married in three years? Be careful what you wish for, grass is not always greener on the other side. Enjoy life.

Morristown's train station is on the midtown direct line, so NYC Penn Station is a quick and easy ~60 min ride.
