Hi all, we're moving next week, and I need to know how much to tip our movers. I've been googling, and I've seen everything from nothing to $100 per guy. Assuming they do a good job, I just want to do what is standard in NJ. And should we buy lunch?

Specifics: The move is about 20 miles away, so the loading and unloading will happen within a day, and we're also having a guy come the day before to do some of our packing. They won't be doing unpacking, as we have to move again in 4 months or so, so we're leaving a lot of stuff packed.

We've never had movers before, so please help!

We tipped $100.00 per man, but there was a hill involved. I bought lunch, and
kept the laundry sink full of iced drinks. I guess they were happy, they asked us to please call if we decided to move again.

I think, but I could be wrong, but I think that's the going rate. I went over that and had a similar move. I bought lunch, had breakfast available, drinks, etc. -- no booze, LOL. Good luck.

I think it also depends on size, amounts, etc. and any extenuating circumstances.

Wow - $100/guy? It's been a while since I've moved, but.... wow!

This is a great question. You may want to post it on the "General Moving Issues" board (if you haven't already). I'm really curious about this as I may be moving in a few months.

We just moved a couple of weeks ago. Only half a mile up the street but it took 11 hours with 5 guys. I bought them lunch and dinner and kept cold drinks coming. I tipped $80 a guy for 3 guys (who worked the hardest) and $60 for the other two. I also gave them a case of beer when they were done.

This question came at a great time! I can't believe how much tipping has increased. The first and only time I used movers I tipped $20 each. inflation! thanks!

Thanks everyone for the guidelines! We so did not want to be those people whose movers "dropped" all the boxes with china and crystal in them.

You have to watch the Seinfeld reruns I think Jerry posed that question to George and no one had the answer.

I never put those on the Truck. I'm afraid they will break. That went in my car, for all 4 of my moves.
I tipped $25 a man, 4 men. I also bought lunch at a local Pizza Restaurant. I did not give beer, they are moving my things and I did not want drunk movers. I had two sets of movers because they needed to change trucks for the long distance move. I tipped again on this end for the unloading.
