How is outside maintenance (snow and lawn/landscape mainly) in these over-55 places or regular planned communities?

How does it compare vs. hiring people on my own in an ordinary development that doesn't offer this?

We are getting older and tired of all this maintenance, but still want to live in a detached house,
so any comments on whether it's really worth it to look for a place that handles this for a monthly fee
or just to hire people directly would be welcome.

Currently, we have a house and hire our own people.
My thinking is that, at least now, I can hire and fire people and maintain control,
but on the other hand, it would be nice just to pay a few hundred a month and leave it all to others.

Do these planned communities do all the work needed and are they dependable and prompt?
Thanks for any thoughts.

I was looking at the Hills, the Toll Brothers or Hovnanian places and the like.

(We are planning to stay in NJ or PA.)

I have visited a lot of 55-plus in Delaware, that have the community fees they call it or HOA fees, and also talked to alot of the people that live there. And I found that you really have to do your homework and do what I'm doing, because they may have the fees but they're not really worth it,or they way over priced on these fees.Go to these 55-plus and walk around and chat with the people there. There are so many opinions out there.Good Luck!

Generally in a non-age-restricted detached house planned community, outside maintenance is the owner's responsibility. Whereas in a townhouse community, it's usually the association's. You should check the bylaws and regulations before buying; they should have a list of what is owner responsibility and what is association responsibility.

It really depends on the 55+ how it's structured on what your HOA pays.
