Have an oak tree (with partly rotten stump) in front yard and just asked Berkeley Heights township to exam it. They came back saying you'd better remove by yourself cause you'll wait at least 2 years for it to be removed by the township...2 years?? Where were all the tax we paid? Is is a normal waiting time?
it took my township almost a year to come assess my tree i called about. I happened to be home one day during the week, and a tree guy pulled up to my home and started chopping limbs off. I went outside, he said twp only authorized a trim. I told him i'd give him $400 if he took it down right there, he said he was wayy to busy that day (it was a few months after Sandy). Said he'd call back the following week, but he never did.
I paid $600 a tree last year for two HUGE trees. You can get it cheaper if you find a guy already in your neighborhood. This is what I am trying to do for this last tree i am trying to get rid of. Between Irene and Sandy, this POS wont come down. Im going to have to pay out of my own pocket.
am I missing something? why is it the township's responsibility to remove a tree on your property?
I was thinking the same thing-of course this is Berkeley Heights where they have sidewalks with strips of grass between the sidewalk and the road-maybe that's where the stump is?
because it is 13 ft near the curb, according to BH's regulation, trees that are within 15 ft from the curb line belong to township. i can hire contractor to remove it of course, but I'll need to call the township and it's super expensive, $1200 per tree even without grinding the stump

That's what I thought... However that price does sound super high unless there are a lot of complicating factors-I would shop around some more. A lot of tree companies were crazy backed up with work 6-8 months ago because of remaining Sandy cleanup but since we haven't had any terrible storms (yet) there are many that are hungry for work again.
you may also be getting the zipcode markup, sucks but thats probably true
More than likely. Here at the other end of I-78 prices are much lower, I can attest to that.
