Hi everyone, we are looking to buy a home in the central NJ area. We fell in love with metuchen but unfortunately, it's out of our price range if we want something that's a decent size. What we're looking for: 300-350k price range, safe area, good schools, and at least somewhat gay-friendly as we are a lesbian couple with a baby. From the research we've done, it seems you can get more space for your money in Matawan/Aberdeen. I know they share a school district but is one town better/nicer than the other? Any areas to avoid? Any other towns you would recommend? All recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Is the commute going to be a factor you need to consider?

We both work in the union county area so we don't want to be too far from there. We'd like to stay close to the GSP.

I have heard that the schools in Aberdeen are 'meh' to 'ok'... I think elementary was ok, but HS not so much? I dont live in the area, so this is VERY much hear-say.

I DO have a friend who lives in Strathmore neighborhood in Aberdeen (I think that is considered (one of?) the desirable areas)... She is really happy there. She has a nice place that she bought for around your budget, a few (3?) years ago.

When we were looking to buy, we looked at a couple houses in Aberdeen, but decided to get something a little closer to the City, where I work. Also, due to a perception of underwhelming schools. (again, this is just based on anecdotal info from friends and on discussions on this site, as well as looking at Great Schools website).
