Hey everyone,

I really didn't want to post this topic because the prices are available on the NJ Transit website, but since I'm a foreigner I couldn't understand the pricing model AT ALL (I think even persons from other US states wouldn't be able to understand the NJ Transit pricing model!). It is based on Zones, plus looks like Rails, Busses, etc all have their own pricing and "scheme". I found it to be a mess and I have no idea of what I'm going to pay.

I'm deciding between a house in Jersey City (Belmont Ave) and Westfield-NJ (North Scotch Plains Avenue) and I need to know the final monthly price per person that I will pay to go to NYC and back to my home/daily? By daily I mean 30 days every month, not only on weekdays.

As an example, I'm trying to figure out something like this:
- Jersey City to NYC and back 1 time per day: $80/mo
- Westfield to NYC and back 1 time per day: $100/mo

Any help is appreciated, thank you!

Westfield is $248/month for a train ticket that is good for a calendar month. Takes you to around 32nd and 7th ave

A Westfield bus ticket is $230/month. Takes you to 42nd and 8th ave. Just and FYI, the train ticket can be used on the bus too

A 30 day unlimited Path (not NJ Transit, it is run by the Port Authority of NY/NJ) pass is $80/month (but it is suppose to go up a lot each year for the next few years). Not sure where you are in JC, but you might need to take a bus to a path station

That's quite a difference in your choices. Jersey City or Westfield. We don't see that toss-up on here often.

Belmont Avenue is roughly a 20-25 minute walk from the Journal Square station. It's a long walk, but the OP might find it doable. If not, like you said, he'll be no more than a few blocks from a bus line that connects to the PATH.

A monthly pass within Jersey City (one zone) costs $54.

The OP might also want to factor in costs for the NYC subway if his job isn't within walking distance of the PATH and/or NJT train.

A monthly rail pass of 248 is valid on ALL NJT services including NJT buses and light rail.

Does the OP have children? Has he taken the schools into consideration?
