So a quick update. We have finally started looking this past week and started in Wyckoff. Really like the town and we still plan on looking in Hillsdale as well. I was told by a friend that I should also check out Glen Rock and wanted to get some information from those of you who have been so helpful as to thoughts on that town. How does it differ from Wyckoff or does it not? I know GR has a small downtown and train access, but anything else I should know? Thanks

GR is Ridgewood at 5% discount. Relative to Wyckoff, more expensive (both housing and taxes), direct train access, walkable to Ridgewood downtown, almost similar affluence, better ranked schools, slightly more diverse (as in more Asians) than mostly white Wyckoff.

Wyckoff
Median family income: 163k
White / Asian / Others: 93.5% / 4.2% / 2.3%

Glen Rock
Median family income: 160k
White / Asian / Others: 87.2% / 9.1% / 3.7%

Im a former Long Island guy who moved to Bergen County last August, looked in all the towns you mentioned and then some. I ended up in Ho-Ho-Kus for the convenience to NYC and Long Island. Can take bus or train, or drive yourself if needed. Wycoff is not convenient for that, and Hillsdale wasnt either IMO. I would look in Allendale, Ramsey, Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Ho Ho Kus for convenience factor.

Appreciate the info. Will research some of these towns. What are your thoughts on GR?

GR is a good town but as others have mentioned in other threads, GR is trying to live up to the reputation of towns like Ridgewood and to a lesser extent Wyckoff. I grew up in this area and have never like GR and ruled that town out when we were looking to buy back in 2012. The taxes are too high and you don't get the same amount of property as you would in other neighboring towns.

We looked for homes in Wyckoff, Allendale and Ridgewood and finally settled in Wyckoff. It's been 2 years since we bought our home and have never had any regrets. We love this town and are looking forward to raising our 2 week old son here.

Like most have said, taxes are to high. We looked at numerous houses in GR in the 500-600k range and taxes were always around 15k. For the same amount of money you get find a house in Ho Ho Kus and taxes will be around 8-9k.

I hear what you are saying. Started looking in Wyckoff and loved it. Only concern is commute to city. I don't have to be in everyday but 2X a week, I will. Coming from LI, I like the train. Don't see myself taking the bus or driving. Not sure how big a pain it would be to drive to another station from Wyckoff, and what the parking situation would be.

I agree that Wyckoff is not that convenient when it comes to mass transit commuting since there is no train line and nearby towns may have (long) waiting lists for parking (especially for out of towners).

Hillsdale, however, actually is very convenient for commuting.
There is a NJ Transit train station in the center of town with plenty of parking - albeit no longer free - for residents (some people walk to the train for an even more convenient commute, e.g. when weather is bad you don't have to even drive to the train station).
Pascack Valley (PV) line trains go to Secaucus for transfer to NYC or Newark Penn station e.g.
The PV line trains also go all the way to Hoboken (for Hoboken and JC) jobs.

Hillsdale also has bus service to NYC via Rockland Coach buses.

Last but not least, the Garden State Parkway (exit 168 northbound) and Route 17 are close by, for drivers.

Hillsdale also has both a Kings and Shop Rite from a supermarket perspective, as well as a number of restaurants.
Nearby Westwood has a lot of shopping options.
The Paramus Park Mall and GS Plaza malls are not too far either, but not too close.

True, I probably didnt give Hillsdale enough of a look, I wasnt even aware it was close to 17. I mainly focused on towns directly off 17, and HHK was ideal since its small enough that I can walk to bus or train from my house, so we dont have a need for two cars even.

Hi - how did you finalize a list and eventually ended up comparing Wycoff vs. Hillsdale? The two towns are almost 20 minutes apart.

Just curious if you used school rankings or otherwise...
