My family is moving to nj next year. We're looking at sparta as a potential area. It seems to be nice and quiet with a wide range of housing prices. Since our budget isn't high 250-300 I was wondering if there are any shady areas in sparta. Are the cheaper houses in good areas as well as the pricier homes?

I've never heard of any shady areas of Sparta, unless you mean the shade under a natural cliff.

Not sure where you are moving from, but you have to make sure that you are OK with rural living. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful, but some people whoa are used to city living can not adjust easily. If you are into outddor stuff, you couldn't ask for a better place in NJ. At least in the summer. Gets pretty cold up here around November. Also, check the taxes on the house you buy. They are generally high in Sparta.

P.S. My daughter had a recital at the Sparta High School - that was the most well-kept, state of the art educational facility I have ever seen.

Thanks all. We are very okay with country living. That's one if the appeals of the area.
Taxes are one of the reason our budget is lower. I love the older looking homes and we have 2 elementary aged kids.

Hackettstown is not what is used to be, had a really nice main st which is now getting "shady". That said it still has very nice areas.
I would look in the Flanders area of Mt Olive, of the 3 if budget permits I would take Sparta hands down

Mt Olive and Hackettstown are far cries from Sparta in demographics. Fredon Township is another good town in Sussex County.
