Actually, you might find a few farmer/redneck types in Chester that meet this description. There are some families that have been there for generations. Anyone living there less than 30 years, probably not so down to earth and humble.
That's true, there is that farm where we go apple picking every year.

So someone who is moderately wealthy cannot be down-to-earth and/or humble? It's not as if the majority of Chester homes are multi-million dollar estates. Plenty of reasonable homes in Mendham center as well. I believe Ken Daneyko lives in a rich Mendham home, he's a pretty great down-to-earth guy from what i know despite wealth & fame, money doesn't define someone. It tends to be the second-generation of wealth (inherited rather than earned) that has the attitude, unless they were parented well.

I would spend a weekend day in each of the "downtowns" to get a feel. Chester seems to draw a few more week-end "torrists" out for a country ride (it's at the intersection of 24 & 206).
Mendham has always been considered more "up-scale" because of the very large horse estates in the township.
All things equal, I'd pick Mendham. Closer train ride. Better high school. More "established" community. Closer to Morristown (where the real action is). Chester has seen more Mcmanisionization then Mendham. Not to say that Mendham dosen't have it's share of sprawl.
The best way to meet fmailies is become active in the elementry school. put your kids in sports or scouts. Mendhan s a good community for SAHMs. Chester seems to have more dual income families.

Well, actually not forever but for pretty long. It used to be split. Part of Chester went to WMM and the other part went to WMC.

Haha....that does seem like forever. The only reason I know it used to be split is that my husband is a graduate of WMC. He had many Chester residents in his graduating class. He graduated longer that 22 years ago, the old fart.
