I love how all the booker fans say hes done such a great job and Newark is so great LMAO ... If it wasnt for Rutgers and some of the federal/corporate buildings then Newark would look like Camden.

This is what happens when you layoff police and let criminals run free.

The police in Newark laid themselves off. The city needed to save $10 million. It asked the police to accept pay cuts, averaging about $10,000 each. The union refused. All the young officers were laid off. The older ones were thrown back into the streets, from their desk jobs and steady day shifts. You think they were as active as the young officers? Many supervisors were demoted one rank, costing them the $10K they were trying to keep, anyway. The Newark Fire Dept. accepted the deal and had no layoffs. The older FFs retired, the young ones kept their jobs & fire safety did not suffer in Newark.

Can a private police force help with the actual public police force? For example can Ex Military people who are trained in what is pretty much warfare and aren't scared and are tough as nails setup shop in a place like newark. Couldn't a not for profit be setup in newark for say 10 years with say 100 footsoldiers on staff and all they do is assist the police catch drug dealers and gang members. They can't arrest anyone but they stalk out and find the bad guys for the police.

You pay each guy 100K + bonus for leading to arrests and you'd catch a lot of people over 10 years.

^^^ Only if they are allowed to use grenades, mortars and blow things up. Otherwise, it's just no fun.

What? Newark should pay $10 Million annually to former GIs, just for giving tips to the police about drug dealers?
You should realize that police already know who the drug dealers are. They've probably arrested the dealers already, only to see them released on bail or probation, then continue dealing. If Newark had an extra $10M, it would not have laid off all of its young officers.

Go and watch seasons 1 thru 5 of the wire and you will see how screwed up local government and the police are.

The whole shows revolves around running a phone wire tap to catch the big fish bag guys....
