my husband, baby, and i are looking to move to NJ. we both work full-time in manhattan and are looking for a manageable commute (ideally under an hour)

we will want to put our daughter (and any siblings to be) in an excellent public school and we will want our kids to be able to attend hebrew school. we are reform/conservative.

we are looking to spend no more than $900K on a home.

thoughts on where we should look?

TBH I'm not Jewish, and haven't I lived in any of those towns; so I can't give you an insider's perspective. A Jewish community is always a stone throw away from just about anywhere in NJ; and unless you were interested in making sure your kids definitely had Jewish classmates in public schools, any of those towns except for maybe Morristown would probably more or less match your criteria. When people talk about towns with Jewish communities on these forums, it's usually towns like Tenafly, Fair Lawn, Millburn, Summit, Livingston, Teaneck, and Highland Park that get named the most with Tenafly probably matching your criteria the most.

If you want train service into the city, Tenafly is a good choice. Millburn/Short Hills is another good choice.
Don't expect that much house in either Tenafly or Short Hills for $900K. I don't know how important it is to you, but you can get a little more house for your money in the parts of Millburn that are not in the Short Hills section.

@AnesthesiaMD: thanks for the input. I actually care a lot about whether we could get a reasonable amt of property for 900 (and indeed, that is our max.)

Questions: how long would commute be from non-Short Hills part of Millburn? And, would you be able to estimate (ballpark) the Millburn "discount" (relative to Tenafly and/or Short Hills)?

when you say "under an hour" you're speaking strictly of the time the train leaves to the time it arrives at penn station, right? because unless you work right by penn station, i don't know that those towns you listed would ever be under an hour, door to door, except maybe tenefly or millburn near the train station or montclair near the train station. ridgewood maybe (i'm not that familiar with their commute time), chatham would be close, morristown no way.

Yes, only the bus into the city, so I would go for Millburn over Tenafly for that reason alone. Plus Millburn/Short Hills has some beautiful homes and top rated schools.

That's funny, I didn't realize that train station was not functional.
